It’s the end of an era for the Columbus food scene.
After 17 years of pioneering the farm-to-table movement, the Caskey family has announced that Skillet, Rustic.Urban.Food. is officially closing its doors.
The news, shared via a bittersweet social media post, cited an “opportunity we could not refuse” as the catalyst for this final chapter. Since its humble beginnings as a small food truck in early 2009, Skillet grew into a neighborhood institution that fundamentally changed how Columbus residents thought about brunch and seasonal dining.
A Cornerstone of Schumacher Place
Located at 410 E Whittier St, Skillet was a vital landmark nestled in Schumacher Place, right at the border of German Village and Merion Village. It was more than just a restaurant; it was a cornerstone of the community, situated just down the street from local favorites like Village Coney and Hey Hey Bar & Grill, and only a short walk from the historic Valters at the Maennerchor. Its presence helped define the Whittier Street corridor as a destination for food enthusiasts across the city.

Seasonal Flavors and Shared Memories
Skillet was legendary for its “ingredient-driven” approach, where the menu was dictated daily by what was fresh from Ohio’s farmers. Fans will never forget the:
- Signature Comfort Classics: Dishes like the Pimento Cheese Omelet, the rich Pork Shoulder Poutine, and the Cheese Blintzes were staples of their creative rotation.
- Famous Biscuits and Gravy: A dish so beloved that some patrons reportedly drove 45 minutes every weekend just to get a taste.
- Family Atmosphere: Run by Kevin, Angela, and Patrick Caskey, the restaurant felt like an extension of their own home.
An Extraordinary Run
The outpouring of support from the community highlights just how deeply Skillet was woven into the lives of its customers. From first dates and engagements to baby showers and graduations, the Caskey family hosted countless milestones for the “extended family” they built over nearly two decades. While the physical restaurant has closed, the team expressed profound gratitude to their staff—many of whom had been with them for years—and to the city that supported them through every economic up and down since 2009.
The Taste Lives On
Though the tables at 410 E Whittier St will no longer be filled, the Skillet experience hasn’t vanished entirely. The family has shared that their Skillet Hot Sauce, signature coffee, and other retail items will continue to be available through their online shop at skilletruf.net.
