Heartbreak in Middletown: 1861 Southern Kitchen Closes Following Fire
A beloved Delaware destination for bourbon and Southern fare is facing an uncertain future. 1861 Southern Kitchen at 423 N Broad St officially closed on February 17, 2026. The closure follows a devastating fire at the building, coinciding with a personal health battle for the owner who is currently fighting stage 4 cancer.
The restaurant was a centerpiece of Downtown Middletown, located near the intersection of North Broad and Main Street. It sat close to the Everett Theatre and local favorites like Middletown Public Library. As a historic building in a densely populated neighborhood, its presence was a key part of the local community fabric.
