Rice Village, Houston, TX

Longtime Italian restaurant Prego, a fixture in the Rice Village community for over four decades, closed its doors on May 31, 2024. The Italian eatery was well-loved for its authentic dishes and community presence.

Urban South – HTX – Closed April 2024

Urban South Brewery in Houston, known for its interesting beer selection, closed in April 2024. The taproom’s closure has left a void in the local craft beer scene, but the brewery will continue to distribute its beers across Houston.

Pastore – Closed March 2024

Underbelly Hospitality’s Pastore, located in Regent Square, closed forever on March 23, 2024. Known for its Italian cuisine and a nomination for Best New Restaurant in the CultureMap Tastemaker Awards, the restaurant closed due to operational challenges. The hospitality group will repurpose the space, exploring potential new concepts.

Chatter’s Cafe & Bistro – Closed March 2024
The Heights, Houston, TX

Chatter’s Cafe & Bistro, a Mediterranean cafe in The Heights, closed in March 2024. Known for its Mediterranean dishes and neighborhood favorites, Chatter’s has been a staple since its opening in February 2004. Google has it listed as Temporarily Closed as of 6/3/2024.

Dinette – Closed February 2024

Modern Vietnamese restaurant Dinette in Houston closed on February 4, 2024. It first opened in July 2022 and offered tapas-style dishes, but it did not disclose its closure reasons.

Golfstrømmen – Closed February 2024

Golfstrommen, a sustainable seafood restaurant owned by Top Chef and James Beard Award winner Paul Qui and chef Christopher Haatuft, closed on February 4, 2024. The restaurant, located in Houston, plans to rework and expand its concept before reopening later. Google has it listed as Temporarily Closed as of 6/3/2024.

Alice Blue – Closed February 2024

Heights bistro Alice Blue closed its doors on February 25, 2024. Its owner was Claire Smith, a Houston restaurant owner for 20 years. In 2017, the restaurant opened as Alice Blue, but it was once called Shade and opened in 2003.


Buffalo Bayou Brewing Company – Closed January 2024

Buffalo Bayou Brewing Company, known for its innovative beer styles, was locked out by its landlord on January 26, 2024, for nonpayment of rent. Despite efforts to resolve financial issues, the brewery remains closed. It opened in 2011 and was a significant part of Houston’s craft beer scene. Comments on Google also reveal different problems the business might have been facing.

Urban Eats – Closed January 2024

Urban Eats, a cafe, gourmet market, and Washington Avenue bistro, closed on January 28, 2024. The restaurant could not sustain its operations despite community support and efforts to overcome pandemic-related financial challenges. Owners Levi Rollins and Eric Munoz thanked their patrons for their support over the nine years they were open.

Health-conscious eatery Picnik closed its Montrose Collective location on January 21, 2024. Known for its diet-inclusive menu, Picnik’s Houston stint lasted less than a year. The restaurant will focus on its Austin locations, hoping to return to Houston.

In January 2024, Dish Society closed its Galleria location in the Tanglewood area after nearly a decade. Founder Aaron Lyons decided not to renew the lease due to the space’s size and need for renovations. The restaurant operates in other Houston locations, including one in Austin.

Ingenious Brewing Company – Closed January 2024

Ingenious Brewing Company, known for its creative beer flavors, closed on January 6, 2024. The brewery faced significant financial challenges due to the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. It marked its closure with a final party featuring raffles, barbecue, and its last few beers.

Dak & Bop – Closed December 2023
18th Street, Houston, TX

Korean fried chicken joint Dak & Bop closed its 18th Street location on December 31, 2023. The restaurant will reopen at its previous Museum District location in early 2024. Known for its crispy chicken and fusion dishes, Dak & Bop plans to continue serving its popular menu items.

Local Foods – Closed December 2023

Local Foods closed its Tanglewood location at 5740 San Felipe St on December 23, 2023. However, a new outpost of Local Foods will open at Tanglewood Local Foods & Market (1707 Post Oak Boulevard) in the new year. The fast-casual restaurant remains a favorite for its fresh, locally sourced menu items.

Shade – Closed 2017

Shade was a popular dining establishment serving American-style meals and a weekly Brunch. It was later reopened as Alice Blue, which has also closed.
