Sudden Shutdowns and Historic Exits: Recent Closures Across the Southwest
The past few weeks have brought a wave of closures to the Southwest dining scene. From historic 50-year legacies retiring to brand-new concepts locking their doors after just a few months, here is the roundup of the restaurants that have recently turned off their “Open” signs for the final time.
The Historic Texas Exits
- New York Sub (University Park, TX): Citing rising operational costs, this neighborhood institution closed its counter after an incredible 50-year run that began in 1974.
- Rudy’s Chicken (Dallas, TX): A longtime Oak Cliff fried chicken staple dating back to 1975 closed its doors on February 28th. Reports indicate the closure is tied to the owner’s declining health.
- China Star (Abilene, TX): This local favorite officially ended its run on March 1st after serving the Abilene community for nearly 40 years.
- Benito’s (Odessa, TX): This local dining room closed its Odessa location in late February and has reportedly relocated its operations to Dumas.
The San Antonio Shakeup
- Wing Daddy’s Sauce House: The chain saw an unexpected double-closure in late February. The DeZavala Road location was abruptly shuttered with a sign redirecting guests to other outposts, and the San Pedro Avenue location experienced an unexpected shutdown with its signage removed.
- Round Table Pizza (11040 I-10): A remarkably brief run came to an end on February 11th, when this location closed unexpectedly after only four months in business.
- Unko Maui’s Burgers (Deco District): Less than a year after opening in 2025, this burger joint was locked out by its landlord.
- Ooh La La Korean BBQ (Park North SC): This location was confirmed closed in early February after also being locked out of its space.
New Mexico Farewells
- Pacific Paradise Grill (Albuquerque, NM): This tropical grill and sushi bar closed in late February after serving the community for 18 years.
- Cocina Azul (Albuquerque, NM): The Montgomery Blvd location of this local favorite was confirmed closed in the middle of February.
Houston & Beyond
- Wooster’s Garden (Houston, TX): The Midtown cocktail bar, operated by The Kirby Group for more than a decade, closed on February 1st. The co-owners leased the space to another tenant and have an exciting announcement in the works.
- Burger Fresh (Atascocita, TX): The Will Clayton location has closed and the signage has been removed, though ownership plans to reopen at a new address in Humble in the future.
- Miller’s Smokehouse (Belton, TX): This beloved spot was forced to temporarily shut down on February 28th after the building suffered significant fire and smoke damage.
