“Most Underrated Restaurant at the Beach”
If the reaction online is any indication, Margaritas Restaurant had built a loyal following in a short amount of time.
One commenter called it “the best and most underrated restaurant in the beach.” Others described it as having “some of the best food in town,” while many shared how sad they were to hear the news.
That kind of response speaks to something beyond the menu — it reflects connection. In small communities like Colonial Beach, restaurants become gathering spots. Owners learn names. Regulars have “their table.” Dishes become traditions.
Two years may not seem long in restaurant terms, but for a seasonal waterfront town, that can represent hundreds of family dinners, birthday celebrations, and summer nights.
A Challenging Time for Independent Restaurants
While no specific reason for the closure was shared, independent restaurants continue to face mounting pressures — rising food costs, staffing shortages, seasonal fluctuations, and the ongoing challenge of standing out in competitive tourist markets.
For a small, locally owned concept, even strong community support sometimes isn’t enough to overcome the math.
What Happens Next?
As of now, there’s no word on what will move into the Wilder Avenue location. Given its proximity to the boardwalk and other restaurants like Riverboat on the Potomac and Sunflower Cuisine, it’s likely the space won’t stay empty forever.
But for those who discovered their love of Peruvian-style ceviche or chicken fajitas there, it won’t be quite the same.
Closures like this are reminders that small restaurants depend on consistent support — not just in peak season, but year-round.
For Colonial Beach, Margaritas Restaurant will now join the growing list of short-lived but fondly remembered spots that once added flavor to the waterfront community.
