After the Last Plate

A Southern farewell to places that fed generations

After 139 years as a Santa Clarita staple and Los Angeles County’s oldest restaurant, The Original Saugus Cafe served its final meal on January 4, 2026. Originally opened in 1886 as a railroad depot stop, the unpretentious diner evolved into a legendary Hollywood haunt, feeding stars like John Wayne, Clark Gable, and Charlie Chaplin during the golden age of Westerns. The sudden closure stems from a lease dispute between the Mercado family, who operated the venue for decades, and the property owner, marking a messy, modern end for a historic institution that had previously survived wars, depressions, and pandemics. This email was originally sent out on January 8th, 2026.

Our Thursday edition, Coastline Closings, highlights restaurant closures along the Pacific edge—covering California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii. Published every Thursday, this edition documents how coastal cities and island communities are navigating the unique pressures of tourism, weather, and rising costs. It serves as a weekly record of how the dining landscape is shifting where the land meets the sea, capturing the stories of the places that once thrived near harbors, highways, and ocean views. I love old restaurants! There is something interesting about the history of a closed down restaurant and the amazing possibility of something new!
